Stasha McKnight

I'm Stasha McKnight, I am a mosaic artist and Mushrooms are my inspiration, I refer to them as Fictive Fungi (Fictive refers to something that’s imaginary, not real or true, and created by the imagination). I enjoy sculpting organic shapes, shaping and choosing the individual mosaic pieces of glass, tiles, pottery, things I have collected and repurposed ending up on these magical pieces I have created.

When I'm not sculpting with Styrofoam and cement, or cutting and breaking glass, you'll find me in nature exploring different parts of the world or spending time with family and friends.

Though I am self-taught, I have sought out instruction through workshops, I appreciate the lessons and inspiration received from other artists.

Each Fictive Fungi is sculpted with Styrofoam, then covered in mesh and cement, dried then each piece of mosaic is adhered with thin-set and grouted. These creations turn my garden into a magical place. Each mushroom is two pieces a stem and a cap. A piece of rebar is placed in the ground/base and then the stem and the cap are threaded onto the rebar to secure it in place. The fact that these are one-of-a-kind creations that cannot be replicated, I am unable to put a price on my Artistic Mastery.

Statement

Dear MCA Gallery of Gratitude,

Gratitude often deepens and transforms as the journey of life continues and the intricate beauty of life is revealed, woven with experience, wisdom, and reflection. I’m so grateful every day.

In nature, mushrooms themselves don’t experience or express emotions like gratitude in the way we humans do. However, fungi are the unsung heroes of the plant world, literally digging deep to get them what they need. and the plants? They’re just living their best lives, sipping on water and nutrients while sending out sugar-filled thank-you notes as gratitude.
